Ok, I stopped by the dealer tonight for a warranty repair and while I was there I asked how to install the stupid thing. This is what the tech told me. This is going to be a long description. Here goes:
You 1st attach the "L" shaped piece to the back of the flat metal bracket. This goes on upside down, not like the vague directions w/ the kit. Now, the bracket goes in the recess where the jack & tool kit go. You have to cut away the piece of plastic which lines the recess on the inside of the trunk. You then have to drill holes in the bottom of the trunk to bolt down the bracket. The changer should fit in the hole, barely, the guy told me that it takes a bit of forcing to get it in. You also should cut the carpet to fit the new changer. The tools and jack which should go in the recess? Oh, just toss those in with the spare, no problem.
I told the tech that I thought this was a stupid arrangement for the changer. Both he, and the service manager agreed that it was pretty lousy, but that's what Audi came up with. They said the old 'U' bracket was discontinued because too many people damaged their changers while tossing in luggage. They also told me that you can probably get the newer carpeted box which holds both the changer and the jack/tools. That's what I'm going to try to get.
