Ok, i know the simple answer to this is not to rev the motor at idle, but...

I noticed it the other day when i accidently hit the gas at a stop light. The car revs up, and the motor kinds of whines on its way down...i don't remember hearing this before. I know these are vague symptoms...any ideas? The car seems to run fine other wise.

Car is a 95 A6 2.8 with 95K miles.

are we talking taking off the whole dash? I've never taken off the instrument cluster. I am pretty handy with the car. I'd love more details. Thank you very much. Pat
