It would throw off the speedometer a bit...unless you upgraded the wheel size to a 16" or 17"...Besides that, a 50 series tire on a 15" stock wheel would be a nice added performance touch....

If my calculations ar correct, my speedo will be off by .8% at 60mph. I am willing to deal with that...

Will 225 fit though?

should be fine, but the added tire width may affect the overall performance...Back in my younger years I experimented with a similar situation, and the hiway sway was noticable...
but the lower profile helped compensate overall driving....also the wider tire gives the car a little more aggresive look....

I got this explanation from one freak, how spends 30 days a year on the race track in his 911.

The rim is 7". It is appropriate to put something like 195-205 tires on these rims. In this case the sidewalls of the tire will look like |__|.
If you will put wider tires, sidewalls will have to compensate nerrow rim width and will loke like (___) or /___\. During cornering sidewalls deform quite a bit something like /___/. I have seen a picture of a car with sidewalls bented ~45 degrees in hard turn. In this case the wide tires with deformed sidewalls will loose grip match easy, then the regular tires with vertical sidewalls.

Audi recomends using maximum 215 wide tires on the 15" rims I would follow this recomendation.

BTW I just replaced original 15" with 16" wheels and very happy with it. I will post nice review after a few days of driving.

The tires themselves (Dunlop GT Qualifiers) are rated to be put on wheels 6.5 inches wide up to 9 inches wide. I believe that the 15's on the '95 Passat were 6.5.

In any case, I had no rubbing problems or unusual wear problems or ride issues. (the same can't be said about the wear on the outer edges of the massively heavy A6q). More info about tire and wheel width can be found at the link below. (There are a couple of sentences that make no logical sense in the article, but I kinda just let it pass...)

Just thought I'd add my $.02.<ul><li><a href="http://www.dunloptire.com/tiretech/Welcome.html?article=tire_width.txt">Tire Width</a></li></ul>
