View Full Version : What performance mods work? Specifically, 12V engine and suspension mods (more, and long)

Hey all,

I'm new here, so bear with me. I getting a 1993 Audi 100 with the 2.8L 12v engine, the Bosch ECU, front wheel drive and an auto box. Overall, the car's in good shape and i love driving it, but I'd like to squeeze some extra performance out of it. Now, engine wise, what do you all recommend to get some decent extra HP? Llyod Melton from TDL racing was a great help here, and recommended some breathing modifications that would add anywhere from 10 to 80 HP, depending on what I'm willing to spend. Now, my question is, what should I go for? Especially giving that I have an auto box and front wheel drive, where is the point of dimishing returns?

Also, I'm thinking of replacing my tired old suspension bits with a set of Bilstein monotube HD shocks and Eibach sport springs, lowering the car about an inch or so all around. Has anyone tried this setup? Is the rid much stiffer? How about cornering and whatnot? I'm interested to hear your opinions, not just on this suspension set, but on what changes make sense for my Audi. Thanks for your help all.

peace

The automatic can likely handle up to about 280hp... but you're never going to get your money out of the car if you do more than about $2,000 in bolt-on modifications like headers, intakes, exhaust, etc. Interested to know his different options and what produces 80hp, and for how much $.

Good place to start is with a $100 cone filter. Word is JET has a chip for the 12v w/Hitachi ECU available, claims are 14-16HP... have really no specifics on it but overall I doubt it will make a huge REAL WORLD difference. I understand WETT and SuperChips have chips for the Bosch ECU. Likely looking at not more than 15hp of "claimed" gain. Most will probably be in the useless for most 5-6krpm range. Where we really need the power is from 1500-4000 rpm, as you might know. ;)

As for the suspension, basically I have heard that the Eibach/Bilstein combo is the best out there, and will eliminate dive/lift and greatly improve the car's handling. However, a set of good, wider wheels and tires would be a good idea to really take advantage of that suspension. 16-17", 225mm tires, or wider (235/245 possible, I'm pretty sure).

Keep in mind that thanks to the fixed beam suspension on the rear, instead of independent like on the quattro model, the car sits an inch lower in the rear to begin with... I think about an inch lower than the front. You notice this on some angles. The quattro is almost 2" higher in the rear. I would have to measure to be sure but I know there is a noticeable difference. Something to consider, just from a looks perspective. Also, some spring sets lower the front more than the rear. I think H&R, for example, does 1.75" front and 1.5" rear. That might make the car look more balanced. Eibach is 1.4 F/R, AFAIK. Shocks will make the ride harsher, especially if you go for 17" wheels... keep that in mind. Where are you located? I know someone in MA with the Eibach/Bilstein setup on a 100S FWD who once offered to let me drive his car to compare, if I was in MA. Personally, I would prefer to try it before I bought, but there aren't many 100/A6s out there with this configuration.

so I will soon be able to comment on the upgraded suspension to complement my 225/45/zr17 toyo T1s' and 17x8 AEZ icon 5s

One thing I can say though is DO NOT go for more then 225mm wide tires, the 12V barely has enough power to get 225s rolling from a stop, manouvering in parking lots feels like you have a trailer attached compared to stock 195s, so 235s or 245s without engine mods might become a nuisance...besides 17X8s and 225s almost stick out from the wheel wells (as you can see in the picture)

Your setup looks good... nice width and stance.
