Porterfield are more of a track pad and not really ideal for street use, though you could use them on the street. I don't think they offer any advantages in the dust department, though. Supposedly very good braking improvement.
PBR metalmaster pads are said to improve braking and also eliminate dust.
Ferodo pads won't dust much either, and also improve braking. I'm going to try these next, since I already have the parts.
Mintex dust about the same as Ferodo or PBR, but I don't think the braking improvement is as good. I have a set of rears to go on whenever I need them.
Pagid dust a bit more and offer braking comparable to stock pads.
ATE is back in stock pad range and will dust like stock pads.
Rofren improve braking and have great modulation qualities, but mine only lasted 11k before starting to dust at a rapid pace. They now dust as much as stock pads. Although, the dust is easy to remove... can be washed off with a pressure wash.
EBC green stuff pads are said to be along the lines of a PBR, Ferodo, Mintex, or Pagid pad in terms of dust and braking improvement.
I haven't had a chance to test all these, but I have used ATE, Rofren, and Ferodo, and soon will be trying Mintex on the rear. Of what I have used, I'd go with Ferodo.
BTW, you can post 100/A6 (pre-'98) questions in the new forum now. ;)

Personally, I just want smoother and better stopping power. I'm not racing it (it's an A6, afterall).

Black dust but much less and far less noticable than the "Audi Red" dust. I read the new Audi pads for the A6 2.7T at least are pretty dustless now too.
If you go with Porterfields, make sure to go with the R4S. The other compounds are track only. Porterfield claims low dust, but everyone I've talked to says they dust quite a bit. I'll probably go with them next for my wife's Integra (my autox car).
My Rofrens dust about half as much as stock, but they're brand new.
Ferodos have a very good reputation in the VW community, including at least one One-Lap of America (see www.parts4vws.com).
