I posted this in newer A6 forum, but I had to check out this new forum per Muhammad's advise:

I'm looking into puchasing a 95 A6 Quattro and was told that the transmission sometimes slips between 2nd and 3rd gear. And was told that this is not a big deal... is it?

Has any one else had this problem?
How expensive of a fix is this?

From my search on the forum, seems like many comments have been made regarding the reliability of the older A6s' transmission. Is this the problem?

Any comment or help would really be appreciated.

The only cheaper way to fix this is to buy a used transmition, but if its used, it could go bad again sooner than you would like.

Older transmitions should be fine, but its expensive to fix if anything goes wrong, period.

MY 95 hasn't had any transmission problems to date. I'm at approx 66,000 miles, but now that I've said it, it'll probably go to hell on my drive home tonight.

Bought my '97 A6 AQ in april of 00. Had 30K on it. A month later I exerienced slipping between 2nd an 3rd. Additionally, there was a squalking sound at the time it shifted. (Sounded similar to a tire losing traction momentarily) Since it was still under factory warranty, I took it to the Audi dealer. After diagnosis at the shop and in conjunction with Audi USA technicians, Audi insisted on replacing with new transmission. (Disn't cost me a dime) Now have 62K on it and have had no problems since.
