Yesterday my yellow engine check light went on and it stayed on...after calling Audi Roadside Assistance they said that I probably just had air in my gas tank and that the light should turn off after it air is "passed out" of the tank. It did infact turn off, and I called my dealer this morning to see if i should bring it in and they said might as well and so i did. They checked the fault code and it was from the gas tank area. He said this is VERY VERY common. He said common causes are if you don't fill the tank up and only put in a couple dollars OR if you don't close the tap enough...he said Audi recommends 3 clicks...I live in New Jersey and I did fill up the other day and I can distinctly remember the attendant only clicking it once...usually i like to here a bunch of clicks to make sure it's on tight, and so this must have been the culprit...kinda weird if you ask me, but i'll buy the explanation....my mind is at rest =)
Jason
98.5 1.8T pearlescent (w/ a car that will not fart again)

Those darn check engine lights can be a real pain at times. From what I heard just about anything not normal can cause them to go off. You would think the engineers could make it "fail-safe" or something. I would advise anyone to find out why the light came on if it happens to them. Mostly, to make sure it is not a major problem but also to put their mind at rest

If an emissions issue (like a misfire) causes this AND something as simple as a loose gas cap (alos emissions, I guess) set it off, they should devise a way to let you know that. Maybe a code displayed athat we could reference in a manual or such.
I know that seems unrealistic, but dragging the car to a dealer and having to pay for a rental EVERY STINKING TIME you leave a cap loose or a plug gets some fuzz on it seems even more unrealistic to me!
Just my $200 . . . (every time I have to go to the dealer to check it out after warranty!)

All I was saying is that Audi is following US EPA Federal regulations where they have to include the complete OBD II system on their cars? I don't understand how we can blame Audi for including something on their cars about which they don't have a choice. From everything I have heard, the problem of MIL lights coming on for annoying reasons isn't unique to Audi in the least. If Audi messed up their system and made it more sensitive than they should have, that's another matter, but I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.
Please explain further how this affects my view of life.

I did everything I could in my reply to keep from attacking this person back. Commenting on someone's view of life based on a semi-technical post is a little out of line. especially when he provided no additional or contradictory information.

Dale,
I wouldn't be too upset, it doesn't look like you're up against a Rhodes scholar here...
Let's see here... We're in a car forum, posting about cars. Of course we'll discuss the division of the federal goverment that mandates potentially annoying devices on our cars, and causes them to be slower. Sounds pretty routine, actually.
AJL
98 Passat 1.8T
