i'm looking at a 5k wagon for a winter beater. it's turbo, how much power can i get out of it cheaply? the coupe needs a bit of work to get her ready for the ski season, it may be better to let it sit in the parents yard and rack up miles on something i don't care about.

The 4000's were phenominally built cars. The 5000's were terrible. Electrical nightmares, front suspension issues, etc. etc.

Let me put it to you this way, I have NEVER driven a _good_ 5ktq unless the owner has admitted to me beforehand that they probably have spent more time/money on the car then it is worth.
