Just a quick note of the results of the LAST autocross of 1998 in Northern California. All I can say is Corey Smith kicked some ass. Everyone knows that Joe Goeke (out of Seattle) has been running well in a 1998 2.8 30V in GStock class, he actually got fourth in the Nationals in Kansas this year (where the big boys play). Well, Corey ain't bad either. Well here is how it went...we decided to go up to Stockton rain or shine to make our presence known in the autocross community. When we got there the track was pretty wet from rain last night...so were thinkin "Hey, we might do pretty good if it rains!". Well...it decided to clear up. Anyway, due to our suspension set-ups we had to run in CStreet Prepared class. A very competitive class with Mazda Miatas, Eclipses, Camaro V6, BMW 3-series and M3s. To top it off there were numerous cars to compete with....including four or five Miatas. Corey starts off with a 84.2, then goes to a 81.X, and finally to a 79.7 second run. The low et in the class is one miata with BFG R1s with a 78.5 time (I think). So Corey ends up getting second in CSP class (out of about 14-16 cars). Not bad for an individual that was running only his fourth autocross ever. All I can say is that many people were very impressed. Especially the experienced M3 folks.
From one of the very experienced drivers (and owner of a BMW M Coupe) I heard "Man, Corey looked excellent in that run...like a professional". Corey definitely deserves a "Way to show dem boys what a quattro can do".
I did not fare as well...{heavy sigh}....my first run I DNF'ed (Did not finish)...actually I missed the second lap turn off and ended my run a lap early. The second run I got a 86.08, and my third run was a 84.3 with one cone (kissed... ever so lightly). The good part was that one of the experienced M3 drivers only got a 84.2 second run.
It started raining again after our run so the remainder of the classes ran in the rain....ahhhhh. The result is that we should PAX very well in this event.
Anyway, I know this should be in the Audi Racing forum...but I had to tell you folks how well Corey did....and how well the A4 can do in autocross.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
P.S. We would have had pictures...but Sean G didn't show :-(
