i am interested in chipping my a4...but i'd like the option of removing my chip when i bring my car in for servicing. i've heard that certain manufacturer's make "removable chips."
can anyone tell me which manufacturers make these chips?

Wetterauer has market share in various parts of the world... Wouldn't you think that if "burning turbos" is the case, they would have done something about it? The US is not their only market with a 1bar chip running their 1.8Ts.
Now, if Joe Schmoe speedshop down the street comes out with a chip that boasted 1bar for the A4, then I would worry.
Cris

Neuspeed will socket their chip for about $50 bucks extra and it is not a full 1 bar chip--I have one and it is great--1.5 sec off the 0-60 with a 1.8t tip. Even with the socket the cost will be almost 1/3 the Wett--it is $178 without the socket.

until visiting this site, Joe Schmoe speedshop and Wetterauer had the same ring to me. Who knows what this companies reputation or experience is outside the U.S., sure we hear from some happy and some not so happy customers here and in Australia.
Sorry, I'm still not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about this company.
According to various German automobile publications, Wetterauer is not doing bad at all. Just take a look at their website. Not to mention of their product list for various different auto maufacturers, from Alfas to VWs (literally). One reason why I love German aftermarket tuning..is the fact that they have to abide by the strict government/regulatory standards. Surely, they don't have that here in the US.... prime example: the Garrett chip for the 1.8T engine.
I think for anyone who is unsure about aftermarket chip tuning... they should just stick with the OEM chip.
My 2 cents.
Cris
Seems to be surviving just dandy. Not to say the 1.0 bar isn't pushing it a bit, but I have yet to hear of anyone roasting a turbine due to the chip around here . . . .

It has been well doc. lately, that Wett. K04 upgrade has caused many a headache. Look in the archives dated Oct. 20. Three individuals, donp (stop in detonation problem), Mr. A4 (I'm still not sure if his problems are solved) and Lucas from Australia (he has been over a month trying to get things straightened out). Also, Miles has had two blown turbo's with the Wett. chip and yes, Miles will admit that he can't prove that the chip caused this problem, but try to convince him that he should put the Wett. chip back in his car!
Look, what are we trying accomplish here, convince Brian that he should spend a needless extra $500 dollars? For what? This forum should be to help each other try to get the best things for their needs and if we can save each other some money in the process, then we have accomplished something.

Well i did have problems, and would have had problems irrespective of
of which tuner i chose. Read my postings in archive.
I am now more than happy with my Wett Kit.
It is a fact that Audi have many turbo's failing in totally stock, un-chipped A4's.
As many people that have had so called "problems" with Wett have had problems with other suppliers.
But Miles blowing 2 K-04 turbos from Wett sounds very strange to me, may be there is some other pre-existing problem.

After reading Ron's comments and the reassuring post of Doug B. (i also have a 1.8t tip), i've decided to go with a neuspeed chip.
I really only want a slight boost in performance, not a road rocket (would have bought a type R or Eclipse or something). Anyone with quattro and 1.8t tip should know just how slow this car is...it's just not right when you get your head handed to you by just about any other car off the line.
Neuspeed seems to be the best bang for the buck and also the most risk-free choice of the lot - especially with the socket option.
