i'm looking for a 2000 Audi A4 and I want to find this out before I order:

i really want to buy a homelink remote transmitter (garage door opener) which is only offered as part of the convenience package. i don't want convenience package because i hate the sunroof and the auto dimming mirror, so can i just get the homelink transmitter separately from parts department? is installation real easy - just tap into the power wires near the interior lights?

please advise. i don't want to spend $1,200 for the entire convenience package to get this transmitter.

I have Homelink on my A6. It appears that the unit is self-contained and you only need to get the appropriate visor and tap into the existing power source in the A-pillar or at the sunroof switch.

FYI, the buttons don't light up at night and it's hard to find as you pull up to your driveway. A minor oversight.

I think you would just have to buy the 2000 Sun visor with the Homelink remote in it, it is pretty well intigrated into the visor.

I can understand your hate for the sunroof, but the auto dimming mirrors are one of the greatest safety features I think that is offered in the market today.
