its like 80ish today, i took a cruise from work and when i came home the fans still were not running. I changed the coolant to the correct "red" type and the temps are the same, one notch over the heavy notch ( or about 11o'clock). Its not overheating so the thermo must be working, I am just suprised the fan doesnt come on to help draw air in, unless the v6 doesnt need it? when the AC is on, they do run because it puts more stress on the engine....that makes sense. I checked the fuse, its fine....what else could it be?

if you are worried, they should turn on then. Even in hotter weather mine only need to come on when idling for alittle while.

The fans are electrical.
You "need" their electrical schematic, and a volt meter to "properly" troubleshoot! ;O)
Other wise we are all guessing, and eventually you may chage the correct part? ;O)

http://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/100750.phtml</a

Because most folks are not vigilant enough to turn the engine off, before it over heats. Or allow the engine to get too hot! Very bad with aluminum heads, and steel block. The aluminum expands at a different rate from the steel. Plus the aluminum "remembers" when you overheat it, and will demonstrate this with future head gasket problems! ;O)
You can let the engine idle, but "know" when to turn the engine off! "Know" the max indicated temp on the dash, to discontinue the test!
Also, if you've just flushed your system, especially on the V6, make sure you open both bleed screws and remove all the air! I've seen air lock the thermostat closed, and blow a heater core! ;O)
The Audi V6 motor is very bad on having trapped air, after R&R of the coolant!

While i replaced my rear speakers i left my radio on. Took me about an hour to do, so when i was done, i decided to start the car up to re-charge the battery a little bit. It was about 90 degrees outside. After putting the door panels back on, and putting my tools away, my fan popped on, for the first time (at least the first time i noticed it). I was happy to know that it worked.

i opened up the bleeder on top and coolant flowed right out, so that section should be air tight...i looked for the other, even with my surefire flashlight i couldnt see a damn thing. I seen the picture miktip posted and where it should be, it just wasnt. my thinking is at some point that hose (and bleeder portion) were replaced with a solid hose for I didnt see anything. I opened the cap and bleeder, it should be well. Thing is, before i changed the coolant the fan never came on...and it was last done at the dealer so i doubt it had air lock.
I guess basically with a good system, good waterpump and a correct thermo that fan isnt really needed unless its absolutely necessary, like sitting in a traffic jam in 95f weather.
I probably shouldnt complain, its not overheating, it stays close to over a bit over the heavy marker....thats about right. I can say this, the V6 takes ages to cool down.....3 hours later and it was still hot to the touch....geesh!
