How much can you advance the timing on this type of ignition system? I know the timing is controlled by the CPU but is there any leeway in adjusting the timing at the distributor?

MasterB 05-07-2003, 08:59 AM $100 for what kind of gains? or are you suggesting just moving the torque curves around? cuatrokoop 05-07-2003, 09:58 AM with the adjustable cam gear, you are adjusting your timing, and "moving your torque curve around." Only real way to increase it, from what I see, is by using a more aggressive cam profile (either more lift, or more duration, or both). Do it right, and you won't really loose any bottom end grunt. FYI, the CQ has a TDC ref. and speed ref. on the flywheel (there are actually 3 ref. pins on the FW), with another sensor on the distributor. That is how it gets its timing information. squidix9 05-07-2003, 12:52 PM

Without prior knowledge it's probably not wise to mess with the valve timing. Mine was set on the dyno form Kolb, and I've been made to swear never to mess with it. Per Kolb, it's what makes the motor "magic". My distributor is advanced about 3-4 degrees from set, but when you factor in the valve timing adjustments, I'm not sure that it can be used as a reference. A more agressive cam will make a world of difference, look at what others are running here. You can get one tailored to keep the bottom end healthy, while helping the top end out too. It depends a bit on what you want, how much you want to spend, and what you're willing to put up with. |
