My 2.8QM wipers chatter all the time except for the first few swipes. It rained all day here in CT yesterday and it was making me crazy (thats not a big leap). My GF has a 5 month old 2.8QT and she says hers is exatly the same except not quite as noisy (I thought it was me until she said this). My widpers are only about 6 mos. old. I put every kind of cleaner I could think of except paint stripper on the w/s and wipers yesterday (like household cleaners with ammonia etc.), it seemed to help but not much. Water beads up on my w/s no matter what I put on it and when the wipers swipe it leaves that thin fog that disappates quickly but kind of implies to me there is something still on the w/s. If I'm going over 40 mph I don't even need wipers cause the water will bead up and blow right off. Problem is sometimes you can't always go 40. If there is something staying on the w/s I wish I could get it on the paint parts cause whatever it is it won't come off. It seems the only thing that will penetrate it would be a rock! Will rainX help this? Anybody have any suggestions?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have the same problem every time I use it and I have a 99.5 2.8. I tried Rain X but it was no help. Does anybody have a solution?

I was also wondering... the driver side wiper also has an attachment to it. What is if for?
Is attachment supposed to face up or face down?

take it to the dealer and have them adjust the wipers. These have a real tight tolerance, and the dealer has a jig to set them up.

think I've only actually turned the wipers on for a just a couple passes maybe twice since I bought it (May 99). Rain-X is excellent. I've used it on past 3 cars I've owned...

If water beads on it, and you don't need wipers above 40 MPH, sounds like some numnut applied Rain-X to it. I gave up on this crap because of this problem; great on initial application, but causes MAJOR squeaking soon after as it ages. Then you can't cleean off old stuff to apply new application to bare glassl;;it defies normal washer fluid and regular glass cleaners (Windex, ammonia/water, etc.)

Try this:
1) for window cleaning, go to auto parts store and look for glass cleaning/buffing compound. This is a powder like you use to clean kitchen sink; you mix with water to create a paste and scrub windshield like you would the sink.

2) Try cleaning the wiper rubber blades with ArmorAll.

3) Next service, say you want new blades and ask for a check of the blade alignment like others have noted.

Miy '98.5 Avant blades are quiet; glass does NOT bead water, and I DEFINITELY need blades above 40 MPH in any sort of rain.

The curved element is an air defelctor to keep it from lifting at high speeds. The problem with the smearing/chattering, and you water beading symptom leads me to believe that you ALREADY have rain-x, vision blade on the windshield.

I have tried vision blade for almost a month now and I share the same symptoms; that I did not have prior to putting it on! I'm waiting untill we get bad slush to complete my assessment, but so far it is only good for making bug cleanup easier (IMHO!). Like everything else it depends on your local driving conditions and style.

I don't mind turning on my wipers, and had no real problem with them before, I just wanted to try this product that everyone seemed to rave about. Big goose egg so far.

It's basically a spoiler which is supposed to help keep the wiper pushed against the windshield. With the wipers in the "parked" position, the spoiler should be on the underside of the driver's wiper.
