We're currently looking at a used 96 A4 that has everything we want, except for a CD player. Is it possible to add a factory changer to this thing? I don't really want to replace the radio due to asthetics, and am leery of the FM based units? Does anyone know what head-end Audi is using? Would the wiring be in place for it?
Also, this is our first Audi (currently have a 97 Neon), so this will be a major jump for us. Anything we should really be checking for on this car? It has Quattro, black leather, black exterior, sunroof. 35,000 miles (must have been a lease). We were originally looking at new A4's, but decided we can't afford it. What has really changed between the 96 and 99 models?
Thanks for any help.

I believe the '96 has the older Delta head unit. I've got the same problem in my early '98. The Delta seems to be a decent unit, but it has a unique Audi plug for the CD changer. The only changer that will fit it is an Audi unit that you have to get from the dealer or a parts importer. I've done enough research to find out that no one makes an adapter. It's very annoying since the unit should cost around $250 but because of the Audi rings on it, it goes for around $450.
As for changes in the A4: Most of the changes have been cosmetic, except the engine. In '98 the 2.8 engine went from 12 valves to 30 valves with a 20hp jump and an equally impressive increase in torque. If you can swing it, get the '98, the extra power is well worth it. The 30V engine is the way to go in the A4. Of course I'm sure most of the folks with hopped up 1.8Ts would disagree with me.

hey buddy, i just got my 96 a4 6 months ago... sad to say, you really do have 3 options.... after my 2 months of intense research this is what i have found...
1. get the factory cd changer (going for $500ish) yes, its the only one trully compatible with the delta unit.
2. get an aftermarket cd changer with fm pick up.. in other words, you will have a remote and you would have to put your radio to 88.1 fm.. i heard mixed opinons but it generally does a good job (static) and that goes for $200-$250ish.
3. get a aftermarket cd player (anywhere from $100-$100) depending on what you get. BIG PROBLEM, the delta unit is VERY VERY LONG (length) so the audio dealer will have to make a kit to install it (it looks ok, nothing to brag about) or you can try and buy a aftermarker installation kit (look in the archives). you are looking $50-$70ish for installation and all.
Today i got my sony cd player and after almost 2 hrs my audio dealer did a decent job installing.. but i love it !! ALSO, big difference is power, delta only has 20watts MAX, and 7-9watts RMS (continuos), the SONY (and most others) are 40 Max and 20ish cont. you can tell a BIG DIFFERENCE. by the way, go to autotoys.com, they have great deals, i saved over $150 on a brand new top to the line sony. it is the best deal ANYWHERE, shop on the net !!!.. let me know if you need anything else.....
