hi everyone, I'm new (I just got my A4 two weeks ago) the A4 is a great car, essentially perfect, it just needs more power. Anyway, I have the 1.8 T, Quattro with Tip...I want to be about 215 to 225 hp, (hopefully get at least 165 hp to the wheels) what do I need to do, is it even possible, thanks for your time!
=)
The first thing you can do is to "chip" it. There are a variety of companies that sell different ECU's(electronic control units) or socketed chips. Besides "chipping" you can change your exhaust and air filter. I have a 99' 1.8T and have approx. 212hp.

I noticed you have a manual A4...since mine is a tip, is there anything else I need to worry about? torque limits?

I have the Neuspeed K04 kit and I love it...car pulls really really hard compared to stock and is waaaaaay smoother than a chipped K03 based car...I know because I went through two chips before I got my K04. I had both the Neuspeed 0.8 Bar chip (very good value...car runs like a champ) and the APR Chip (expensive...car was hard to start and it's build on ancient code, but it was pretty quick)finally I got my K04...which pretty much whips ass on any of the chip solutions I've had or driven.
They have a special program for the Tip transmission if you decide to get a K04 kit..they back things off a little to keep from breaking parts in the transmission.

BTW- If anyone is curious I got them from APR for $90 each...and I bought a full set of Mintex Red Box pads from Adrionac (sp?).
Anyhow here's the question...which one is the left and which one is the right rotor. They both look like they'd fit on either hub...but the hole pattern seems to indicate that there is a left and a right side...how do I tell which is which.
Here's what I figure with the rotor facing me as it would sit on the hub there is a pattern of 4 holes then 5 holes...which repeats over and over making a pattern that looks very natural if it were turning clockwise..I assume this is intended direction of rotation? In this configuration the O in Brembo would be turning forward moving from left to right...I'm reffering the the Brembo stamp on the top of the disc.
That aside is there anything else I should look out for...I heard something about damaging the wheel bearing once...maybe I'll check the archives.
Thanks in Advance,
James R.

Do you mean 'M' box code (as opposed to 'P' or later), or can you elaborate any?
Just curious..

ECUs. This is because Bosch sells the M-code ECUs @ volume pricing to tuners, whereas the P-code ECU is only available from Audi ($$$).

like Shat on thier M coded box. It was very difficult to start in the morning and pinged like nobodys business. When I changed back to my Neuspeed P code based rev D07 box my car ran like a champ again...started w/o any hesitation in the morning or whenever. Finally I now have the K04 and run as much boost as the APR box (but waaaaaaay out further than a K03 can muster) and the car is free of pings...somebody please explain that one??? 5000 RPM 13 or so pounds of boost and still pullin hard...not a sound.

BTW - I'm not knocking the APR stuff...just pointing out some stuff that I've observed. I've been through 3 chips now and feel like my opinion is at least worth hearing...take it or leave it.

These are minor revisions to the code base that are performed by audi as tweeks to existing code. Often times they are issued as fixes for things such as cold start problems...and pinging. I took my box back to Neuspeed (it used to ping) it was based on P code...but Rev D04 (99 1.8TMS) I changed to rev D07 (more current) and the car ceased pinging...and I felt 0 loss of power or performance...go figure.
