I am having that noise many have talked about in the past. If you push down on the front of the car you can hear a groan or creak like rubber bushings making noise. It sounds and feels like its coming from around the top of the shock tower. It is loudest when going over bumps, like speed bumps or the end of a drive way. It is also noticable while driving over rough roads. It seems to be un-related to speed, but related to wheel movement.
I have had this noise for a while but I just put on the Ronal 17' wheels and it became much louder.
I have read every thing in the archives on the control arm issue but not much on how these things got resolved, any one who has solved this problem, please let me know.
I have 1.8 TQM,Eibach/Koni's Ronal 17' 225/45/17 tires
Phil--
I was one of the posters on the control arm. Mine was damaged after only two hours of driving in Manhattan. (see post a couple of days back, thoughts on durability) Anyway, since then I've driven several thousand more miles, back to Michigan, etc., and finally got it to act up at the dealer the last time (it sorta came and went.)
I got it to squeak sitting right in front of the service garage door, just by turning the wheel slowly when it was parked. The service guy got out by the wheel and listened, and also thought it was coming from the top of the shock tower. When they pulled it in and checked it out, it was the control arm (aka, A4 achilles heel).
They are replacing it tomorrow, and I'll let you know how it goes. They're also replacing a busted wheel bearing in the rear (produces a moaning/groaning sound from the rear, goes away on curves or sharp turns to one direction. Thanks to the person here who diagnosed that one for me before I brought it to the dealer! Report tomorrow night.
Rich
'98 2.8Q sport
