View Full Version : Got a question for all you cross training mechanics. HeySoos 04-27-2002, 08:37 PM 89 VW Fox is stuck in reverse. Common? Possibly easy fix or really bad. Thanks. cuatrokoop 04-27-2002, 09:22 PM linkage problem or clutch. is it a 4spd or 5spd... can you get it out of gear with engine off? HeySoos 04-27-2002, 09:33 PM Thats how it got towed. I guess it feels like the shifter is loose or something might have broken. Sorry, that's the best explination I can give. cuatrokoop 04-27-2002, 10:23 PM well, if you can engage/disengage the clutch, then i'd look at the linkage first (external or internal, ie pushrods or forks). did it make any big noise (ie, broken fork), or did it go quietly? HeySoos 04-28-2002, 09:22 AM but thanks for the help. That'll be the first thing I check out on it. Jaredg 04-28-2002, 01:35 PM Have to look at the shift linkage. I know with Jetta's etc they have a plastic assembly in the shift linkage that comes loose etc. With the fox the shifter may be straight into the gearbox. cuatrokoop 04-28-2002, 04:44 PM the fox uses an "audi" transmission due to having a N-S engine arrangement vs the normal VW E-W arragnement (014 or 013, 4 or 5 spd)...not an 020 deriv. linkage is pretty different, but still suspect in this case. if you know what a coupe GT shifter looks like, you'll have a pretty good idea what his '89 Fox linkage looks like. even has some CGT part numbers in it... |
