I have the worst headlights ever, 9004. So I was wondering what the highest wattage bulbs I can put in them. And also in the foglights (H3) before they melt. Thanx for your time.

View Full Version : Highest wattage bulbs possible..... dieRICEdie 12-12-2001, 04:27 AM I have the worst headlights ever, 9004. So I was wondering what the highest wattage bulbs I can put in them. Ichabod Schloppenheimer III 12-12-2001, 06:40 AM but have you tried the DOT legal extra output 9004 bulbs marketed by GE and Sylvania? -- NOT the blue junk, but regular bulbs with a 55 watt low beam, which became legal in 1998 instead of the original 35 watt spec. For many people, those are all the difference they need. I've used the 80/70 watt from Competition Motors (see ads in _Autoweek_) in several Fords with good results, but find that even they overheat the wiring on SAABs and Audis (an older 5000 CS). Some claim that the problem with 9004 and 9007 bulbs is the poorly designed connector, and that you can avoid overheaed wiring problems just by cleaning the connectors frequently with Radio Shack electronic tuner or connector cleaner. bmwslayer 12-12-2001, 02:49 PM Ichabod Schloppenheimer III 12-13-2001, 05:31 AM 9007, and probably 9005 and 9006. I too have run 80/100 watt H4 bulbs in a great variety of cars with only one problem once on a very old Toyota Celica (caused by the strands in the wire breaking because of the frequent "cold-working" of the wire on flip-up headlights), but the experience of many people on saabnet.com and brickboard.com suggests caution with the 900? series bulbs because of inadequate connector contact area if the connector metal inserts are not kept perfectly clean -- even with stock bulbs sometimes. |
