I have not found a huge difference in gas mileage..in fact I believe my highway cruising milage may have improved(although this may be more due to the engine breaking in...) To be honest you can expect to see a slight drop (1 or 2 mpg) but only because it is so darn tempting to slam on the gas. You don't have to rev the engine as hard(i'm assuming you have a 1.8t) to drive comfortably in traffic though....
My only complaint is that I don't feel comfortable putting anything less than 93octane in the car(to prevent premature detonation). I've never had pinging, even when I was forced to put 91 in the car while i was in toronto.
I've not read of anyone who has had trouble with mileage...I don't think it should really factor into the decision(that is unless you can't get premium gas....)
