I hope I'm not violating some sort of netiquette here, but I wanted to bounce this off the Allroad crowd. I'm definitely getting Llumar ATR Charcoal tint on my A6 avant. But I'm still struggling with whether to get 35 all around or some combination of 35 and 15 (my tint shop doesn't have anything in between). I agree with many who say 35 all around looks the best. But I had that on my last car and remember thinking at times it was too light. Now that I have a wagon and am hauling around 2 little ones, I am seriously considering the dreaded 2-tone tint. But, like I said, 15 is the next shade darker that I could use on the back window, back sides, or back cargo windows. I've read comments from some people that 15 is too dark to see out of at night. But, isn't that about the same as the OEM tint on today's minivans and SUVs? Anyone with a variation of these tint shades care to chime in? Any regrets? Pics of side profiles would be great, too. Thanks.
I would prefer 20% all around, but I'm legal the way I am so it was an easy compromise.
IMO - 35/15 two tone is too much of a contrast. Can you find another shop that can do 35/20 or 20 all around?

the back 3 are dark, but not too bad, can still see out at night unless using the rear sunshade too.

http://forums.audiworld.com/allroad/msgs/91224.phtml</a

In Mass, however, this is pushing the tint code on th rear window. Luckily Mass Troopers do not carry two piece tint meters which is what is needed to check the rear window(s).

I would do the darker in the rear. I may get the front 2 redone at 20% so I have no contrast. My pic with tint is in my pic poster.

I believe it's the question of clarity rather than how much light is let through. I would think a similarly rated smoked glass allows for better visibility compared to applied tint. I think the rigidity of glass allows for better optics as it's more uniform then a flexible tint applied on the outside of the glass. Anyone who used plastic lens vs glass sun glasses knows what I'm talking about. Applied tint also makes the window thicker further reducing visibility.
This is just using common sense and applying some logic on my part. If we have a resident physicist he/she can explain how and why. If money was no object I would get the windows replaced with smoked glass.

...(or so my tint guy says).

Are they suggesting they put tint in the glass? I don't see how that's possible without replacing the window. Or you mean you have 15% oem glass.

I REALLY want some privacy in the back, and would like to tint the rear 5 windows as low as 15-20%. But I don't like the front two being tinted at all because I just don't want to reduce visibility (plus I hate it when someone flies up to a stop sign with tinted windows and I can't see their face). Would it really look THAT bad? After all every sport ute on the planet is this way from the factory (and maybe that's as good a reason itself to NOT recommend doing it).
edit: also, tint laws in VA only allow 50% on the front two . . . and there are some mighty bored troopers where I live.
