I know several of you have installed an Ice-Link in your AR and are happy with them. I have just recieved the new version called the Ice-Link Plus. I have a Proclip too that I will mount to the upper right side of the counsel near the glove box. My question is how are you getting the connector behind the radio without drilling any exposed panel parts at the glove box or center consol?

I must really be missing the obvious. Any advice will be appreciated.

Merry Christmas,

Robert

Once you pull the head unit out you'll be able to fish the cable from the Dension iPod base unit along the side of the radio and into the area behind the radio. Does the plus give a song and artist readout on the head unit display or is that a future thing?

I have been told the head unit will display additional info like you mentioned. Since I have not hooked it up, I am not positive. But when I do I will post the info.

Also, I forgot to ask, do you ABOSOLUTELY need to disconnect the battery before install. I have the radio code so I am not worried. I just would rather be able to check this thing while I'm working on it. Its cold as #&LL in Chicago right now so I'd like to keep my car running with heat while I am installing the unit.

thank you,

Robert

When I took the head unit out I disconnnected the cables that go to the head unit. One of them is obviously power. After I plugged in all of the cables including the two that come from the ice>link and plugs into the port of headunit where the harness was unplugged and into the harness you should be good. Don't forget to attach the ground wire coming from the ice>link...I think that's probably important.

I installed the Ice-Link Plus through my external CD changer in the trunk (if your car was manufactured after 2002 this option is not available to you). Anyway, I can answer some of your questions: First, to turn off the power merely unplug the fuse. Don't pay attention to the map on the fuse box panel, the correct fuse location is in the manual. When I finished the install and re-inserted the fuse I didn't need the radio code. Second, even though I also assumed I would see the text on my headunit (since I see text when listening to the radio) it doesn't work with Audi. Supposedly, Dension is trying to address this issue. When they have a solution you will be able to download it. Third, the default setting on Ice-Link Plus (which allows you to use the head unit to navigate thru songs) is not user friendly. For instance, to scroll through ipod menu options you need to go to Disc 6, then toggle using the track button and forward/reverse buttons. Read the instructions carefully and switch it back to let you use the ipod to control song selection. Once you do that it is a fantastic addition to the allroad.

this will give you an idea of what kind of connectors are back there if you end up mounting it with the connector behind the SymII HU.

Good luck!

To All Italian: Well I'm not sure how well the Ice-Link works compared to the Ice-Link "Plus", but I can tell you that now that I actually got the darn thing to work, ( Many thanks to etaudi's heads up on using the Ipod UI, instead of the Dension peace of crap interface - my assessment ) It works OK, and just Ok.

Dension advertises on their website being able to see song info on the head unit while using the new Ice-Link "Plus". You only get to find out it does not currently work, only after you receive the unit and read the directions stating updates may be available in the future from Dension.........Oh great thanks for mentioning that tidbit of information, salesman.

Next the dock that attaches to the Proclip has some play, about an 1/8" of rotation left or right even though I have the set screw as tight as it can go.

If you choose to use the Dension UI instead of the Ipod UI, there are several short comings:

1. Scrolling through your playlist is way slower than using the click wheel on the Ipod when using the Ipod UI, which of course is disengaged with the Dension UI.

2. The backlight on the Ipod does not come on when you scroll through songs, so you cant see the screen......that is a "GREAT" software feature:p

3. The font size on the screen of the Ipod when using the Dension UI is way to small, not nearly as easy to read as the APPLE font.

4. While it is very simple to hook-up, you would not get that from the instructions. I thought I had the wrong harness until I got an email from the CEO, he was helpful. My confusion came from the fact that there is one orange plug that goes into the back of the head unit from Audi. The harness has, you guessed correct, an orange plug and receiver. But guess what, you hook it up to one of the black plugs from Audi...good plan with no clear instructions. This is what happens when you still get dressed using GARANIMALS;)

All in all, in my opinion, it is a nice gadget that works pretty well if you use the Ipod UI. The whole system, again my opinion, is overpriced for an interface that does not really add any more features than to hook up your Ipod to your car radio. I just don't think thats worth $200.00.

Hope that answers any questions you might have.
