I was thinking about doing this to cover a small scratch in a door since I decided not to repaint the door. The pinstriping would cover the scratch perfectly, which is just about 2 inches above the door handle. Thinking about black pinstripe, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

I just happened to be following a 99 A4 Avant 1.8TQ? today. I was trying to figure out why that car looked so much different than my Avant when I noticed a black, maybe deep navy, pinstripe all the way around the car. IMHO, the pinstripes detracted from the elegant design of the car. Especially the rear hatch!
So, if you are set on pinstriping your Avant, I would strongly recommend that you terminate your stripes at the rear quarter panel. Don't have them continue around the rear hatch. Just my opinion.

My previous car was a '90 Accord Ex. It was charcoal metalic grey (grey interior too, I wish Audi offered the same color scheme) with a simple double stripe from the nose to the tail (you know, the 1/8" over 1/16" double line) in a metalic grey shade barely darker than the car. From 15-ft you could barely see the stripe. I bought the car from a local dealer who got it from another dealer in another state. When the car came in he told me it had stripes and a dealer sticker, two things I had told him I did not want. He said he was having the sticker removed, but wanted me to see the stripe before he had it removed. I liked it. :-)

P.S. my black A4 has no stirpes, stickers (except for two small A4.org window stickers), front tag (not required in Miss.) or monagramed licence plate frame. I have painted the chrome trim around the stock grill black (see FAQ) and I am looking for a place that can plate the chrome emblems dark grey or black.

3M and Prostripe each make a wide selection of tape pinstripes in different sizes, styles and colors. You could buy the color/style you like for about $10, apply it, and decide if you like the look. If you do, I would recommend having a professional paint one on your car with a product called, I think, Sure Shot. The painted stripes won't collect wax/dirt and will look much better than the tape. If you don't like the look, peel it off and say good-bye to only $10. You can buy the tape stripes at your local auto body jobber or supply store.
