The CD Changer FAQs don't seem to address the 99.5 changes. Anyone able to shed some light on the issue, or is it really so straightforward (4 screws and the DIN connector)?
Input appreciated before I break out the screwdriver later tonight.
I have a 99.5 1.8T with the standard head unit. I just purchased the 6-CD Changer from Clair. The changer came with 4 screws, and the car apparently came with the bracket and the connector...
It took me about a hour to install.
You have to take a couple of things off, to make sure you can get your hands near the bracket. But after that, it's a breeze. You'll only need to use two screws

I have the same head unit/changer from Clair and it went soooo easy. The only thing I came across was the question of vertical/horizontal mounting. 99.5 switched to horizontal (there's two screws on the side that have to be adjusted) and none of the literature has been updated. I do have an Avant and am not completely sure the sedan has the same setup, but if you know the difference between vertical and horizontal you'll figure it out in a nano-second. I was convinced it was a horizontal mount but everything I read everywhere said it should be vertical. Finally got someone at Clair on the phone that knew about the change for 99.5.
It seems we need two FAQ updates: Aftermarket and OEM. In my case, I'm looking for OEM info. Still, lots of interesting and useful info from your link. Thanks.
Seems there's two main places people get their CD changers:
Clair, 6 disc, $270
Autotoys, 6 disc, $235
For an extra $35 bucks, seems like you get a cleaner install and an OEM changer. I'm thinking I'll probably spend the extra $35.
Does anyone disagree with this logic?
I'm excluding the Autotoys 8 disc changer, because past posts have described a need for a custom mount.
You don't need a custom bracket to mount the 8-disc changer, but you do need to bend some metal and drill some screws into the changer itself. I had a car stereo shop do the install. $300 installed including the adapter. I don't get random play, but I don't care about that, I never use that feature.
