I have a '96 A4 that needs a steering rack. I only have 59,000 miles... Does this seem odd to anyone else. Has anyone else had this problem?

I believe many people have had this problem including me with my 96 A4Q at around 30K miles.

I had a minor glitch and bent the steering rack. Cost me $1700 to fix - $1000 parts, $700 labor. Took two weeks all in all, had to wait for parts. Was fun riding the VTA =)

What were the symptoms for most people who needed their rack replaced ? Hard steering ? Strange noises ? Leaking fluids ?
