View Full Version : Oil leak update.....

As you may remember my allroad developed a major oil leak on an out of town work trip 4 days after I picked it up from the dealer for a second attempt at repairing a supposed rear main seal leak. After some discussion, the dealer did drive a loaner car to me and drove my allroad the 180 miles back for repair. The driver came with oil in hand to stop and add oil on the trip back if needed. That was a week ago Monday. They just looked at the car for the first time yesterday (claiming they had too many people out sick to get to it sooner). They now claim that when you replace the rear main seal there is a shim that holds the seal in place that is supposed to be replaced with the seal. As the shim looked OK, the mechanic did not replace it on either of the prior two repairs. They think this caused the last repair to let loose. They are supposed to drive the car back to me the end of this week. I wish I had some faith that this car was not going to self destruct. I would like to get one more year out of it as I just recently put new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on the thing, but I am just afraid to depend on it. I think I need a new dealer, but this one is the closest at 90 miles from home base. There is another dealer about the same distance, but others I know of have been unhappy with their work as well. Fortunately the Cabriolet has been relatively trouble free and the S4 is about to be modded heavily so I won't have to worry about warranty dealer work again once I get rid of the allroad. The S4 will see private repair shop only. It is a good thing that I do not find Audi's current and future designs very appealing as I doubt I could ever bring myself to buy another Audi/VW product again.

...is less than competant; I guess good Audi mechanics are hard to find. Fortunately most of us have not had to find out just how good Audi service is. Glad you're having better luck with your other Audis, though.

Change the word "oil" to "coolant" and I could have composed this post.

Although I have to say that I might be too optimistic because it's not my car...
Sorry to learn what you're going through and I hope they make it up to you somehow same as for Aaron.

The allroad was my favorite car ever for its first year and first 9000 miles. No problems at all. My first year experience with it and for the most part the dealers (except for the selling dealer marring the wheels because they did not know to use the center cap tool when they rotated the tires) was positive. I liked it so much that it solidified my decision to get the S4 one year after allroad from the dealer I am now using. Then in its 13th month, it developed the small oil leak that has been with it for over a year now. Initially the dealer kept denying it was leaking until I brought in the oil stained papers I started keeping under it. Then within 2 months the wood trim on the parking brake broke off, the passenger front door handle started to crack, the front seat started creaking badly, and the small passenger door map pocket would not close. The heat sheild also started rattling more and more. These were all eventually repaired. At 18 months, the alarm constantly misfired. Twice the dealer told me there was nothing wrong with it and there were no error codes. This went on for over 6 months. Eventually I got a VAG-COM and low and behold there were alarm misfire error codes indicating the interior motion sensor was shorting. Finally fixed, but I had to diagnose the problem on my own. Heating fan motor then started squealing; fixed on first complaint. Oh, somewhere inbetween all that the engine cooling fan motor started grinding loudly and had to be replaced. This has all occured in my second year of ownership with only 16,000 miles on the car. I cannot believe how different the first and second year of ownership have been. I simply cannot wait to see what the third year holds, if it makes it to the end of its third year. So those of you that think you are in the clear because your new allroad is just fine, be warned, I was completely satisfied with the car for its entire first year. Now to add to the tale of woe, I got out of work today and the 2003 A4 loaner would not start. After the 5th try with it starting and immediately dying, I noticed the immobilizer light would flash just before it died. I relocked and unlocked the car and it started. So even this loaner has alarm problems. Got to admire that wonderful Audi build quality. What makes this all the more troublesome is that my closest dealer is 90 miles from home. That makes all these addditional trips for repair all the more irksome and time consuming.

I would look into the lemon law in your state because that oil thing in my state would qualify and they would have to buy it back!
Sorry
I personally have had some problems but I have a great dealership. I do think Audi QC dept is not what it was in the early to mid 90's. Those cars were bullet proof!
Good luck

After a litany of complaints, including a rear main seal and a valley gasket, I finally got AoA to buy back my car, for what I paid, plus tax, less 10%. End result: $6,000 in my pocket and a new Volvo XC70.

I suppose it was worth 38 days in the shop over a year's time, but maybe not...

I would look into the lemon law as well. That seems an excessive number of problems!
I have to say that I'm afraid now, just had the car for less than a month...
Anyway, I sorry about your problems and for making a quick assumption from your previous post
