I was driving my 97 1.8Tqm this past weekend and it has developed some clunking/creaking noise in the front suspension area. Performance seems unaffected but noise worries me. My gut tells me that it is eminating from the anti-sway bar somehow. Does anyone have experience with this?

There is a LOT of stuff on font-end creeaking -this is either A-arm or sway bar bushings.

Clunking noise apparently is different - don't remember description of this. For what it's worth, my 98.5 30V Avanthas a front end rattle - sounds like a metallic to plastic rattle I hear on bumps. I can't find it when crawl underneath & pound on components. Will let dealer play with it at next service.

I have heard something that may be similar in my 99 1.8Tqms, sometimes when braking hard and turning (usually to the right i think) and I hear this loud kinda popping noise. It's tough to explain it sounds like it's coming from the front left of the car but it may just be because the windows are open. It worries the heck out of me because it sounds like something broke off the car but it only happens on occasion and i've never seen anyhting or had it affect the car.

Really sounds like worn bushings...

Had the same problem on mu 98.5 1.8t first on the left and then right. Dealer fixed both sides separately under warranty (I believe replaced bushings and lower A arm). No problem now but I'm worried if these things go every 20,000 mil, might be expensive in the long run.

Had the same problem on my 97 1.8TQ. Covered under warranty by the dealer. Replaced the upper A arm, and bushings.

I had a clunking/rattling noise on the front left going over bumps. To puyt a long long story short, it was the 'C' link that hold the front sway bar. The dealer replaced both. you could rattle this link when the weight was off the suspension

The part number of the offending part(s) are:

email with the fix, I'm interested to what the problem
