View Full Version : Being a not-s0-technical car person, how difficult would it be to learn to swap break pads?

Or, in other words, would anybody be willing to show/teach/make sure I dont F up, while changing pads for RA this weekend?

How long would it take to perform said activity.
Please provide time frame with beer consumption and without beer consumption.

Where are you located? I can help Sunday if you can't find anyone else.

And in what town do you currently reside?

So getting up here slightly after noon should be fine. But it is your call. If you want to get it done on Sat and be done with it, that's you call.

It looks uber easy.

I found some old school pad how to's on quattro123.com

There's some liability in having others do your stuff if they aren't mechanics....

So I'd go to a shop or DIY with some buddy.

Keep in mind brakes are SUPER important.
Generalizations:

Pop spring on top, check how it goes together.

Large flat screw driver to push piston back in a bit, remove inner pad.

this frees up space to get the outer pad out.

Once that is done you *might* be able to address the rotor if needed.

Pads:

Look up Chambfer (sp) bevel the pad ends.

SOME pads are thicker so you may find pushing the piston in (with a brake tool) all the way is CRITICAL.
< grease all pad BACKING PLATE edges which contact the carrier slots / edges >

You should check your guide pins.
Learn how they work and float the caliper around your rotor. Rebuild kits have new rubber booties, fix the torn ones.

have a super thin 15mm box end wrench. Sue the open end. Sears has a cheap "Companion" brand which is thin enough not to file/grind down.

Always use HIGH temp SYNTHETIC brake grease!
The stuff is about $15 for a PINT tub.

ALWAYS use NEW hardware.............they have square bolt head edges (not rounded to kill you later stripping/rounding them)and loc-tite.....
(important)

Then there's bleeding your brakes.........

Dot (new) 4 or new 3 if you must. See what your system has.

Autozone carries Audi/VW bleeder screws. Have spares.

Get specs.........use a torque wrench.

or go see Daryl.
