Took delivery a couple weeks ago on a silver 99 2.8 quattro. The dealer explained that they are having a problem with the 99 silver cars in transit. It appears the problem occurs when moisture gets trapped under the wrappings/coating they use for transport to the states. In any case, the moisture does strange things to the clear coat that they cannot remove. Mine has been at the dealer for a couple days and they are considering repainting the hood because the "procedure" Audi gave them did nothing to rectify the problem.
Check your car before you leave the dealership, the effect of the moisture looks like a ghostly haze/light puddle on the paint, but is not removable.
On the plus side, they gave me an A4 Avant 2.8 for a loaner.
--Eric

This is probably a condition known as water migration. This same thing happened on the VW Jetta a few years ago when they first started using "wrap guard". What happens is that water gets under the plastic and is absorbed by the clear coat. One cure for this condition is to very carefully use a heat gun to evaporate the moisture. If that doesn't work then the affected panel has to be repainted. On the VW's it only happened on Suede Silver, Black and Green cars.
