I drove down Alpine road yesterday, where the potholes were so bad I thought the car was toast for sure! They even had construction signs and all they said was be careful(no work being done)...My dad went to the stealer to have brakes done on his car today. Dealer warned my dad to stay off Alpine as peoples suspensions and axles were snapping! I think it should be legal to sue the city for damages(or can you?). **** Illinois road works! I've heard Chicago is awful as well...Haven't been downtown in awhile. First the snow plowers toss salt pelts at my car on purpose and now sinkholes...If you can't beat em' join em', time for a Unimog!
the city doesn't bend wheels, drivers do when they hit pot holes because they tailgate the person in front of them. if you bend a wheel deal with it and get a new one.
this is the same misguided mentality of the people who buy expensive cars, refuse to buy snow tires and then get pissed at the dealer or manufacture when they crash in foul weather.
or what about the people who think automakers should be held liable for car damaged as a result of the driver running the car into a parking block
I could go on and on...

If a huge pothole is right in the middle of intersection. And you make a left turn ofcourse you will end up tailgating the person infront.
I was not "speeding", was not "tailgating" either. barely made the turn at 5-10 mph ... fracked up my passenger front. That freaking thing was deep.
The city has really done a terrible job on the roads thats why they are crumbling like cookies. Heck we dont even get that much snow compared to the euro countries/cities. This just boils down to crappy workmanship & material being used.

Do you know what creates pot holes? It's a combination of water, freezing temps, thawing temps, rain, freezing temps, huge pressures from cars, etc. etc.
Can't you figure out that this year has been the worst conditions for this? It has. If it froze and stayed frozen, then none of this happens.
If the road is brand new and water doesn't leak below the surface, it doesn't happen. But the roads are not brand new and this happens. This year much more than normal.
That's it. It's not crappy workmanship and materials. This is Chicago, they use some of the best techniques due to the design requirements of the traffic.
Go to a place like CT with rural roads, they crumble really easy, but then again, they have a lot less traffic.

besides I was disagreeing with the points being made about tailgating & slowing down. And neither have to be true for not getting an expensive repair.
As far as roads conditions are concerned compare it with "countries" that do get snow and do have old (some are alot older) roads as well. None of the reasons you gave prove any difference in driving conditions either.

For every 1000 I avoid, I'm bound to crash into one. It happens. **** it. I should know better than to drive a low car with big wheels in Chicago winters, but most of us take that risk anyway.

Yes we all know how potholes form....And a person can't help hit pothole when they cover the whole fuggin road, you are gonna hit some always! I don't condone suing, but when money a person gives to the state is not being properly distributed, a person should be able to get their money back. All they would have to do is do a fast patch and wait till summer to do it right. The town I live in has run out of salt and sand for the year already! So yeah, I think that the community and people in charge of the roads are idiots!

ha classic! do you really believe the lack of prompt pot hole repair is a leading example of how local state and federal government misappropriate funds?

"In the meantime Alpine continues to see more and more potholes, and they continue to grow in size. Some potholes are so deep you can actually see the re-barb steel used to build the roads which could do severe damage to a tire. City workers have already filled more than 2,500 potholes on Alpine." 4 potholers working constantly...So you know....roughly 7 holes filled a day and 7 hours of sleep in the truck.
"Mayor Larry Morrissey turned up the heat on the pothole plague this week, when he threatened to close a 1.5-mile stretch of North Alpine Road between Spring Creek Road and East Riverside Boulevard if the state doesn't fix it."
WTF is your point? This didn't just happen overnight....Its been going on for a long time. Go take your old Porsche down the road and see if anything breaks superman! I bet you can just dodge and weave them all like an old Grandma....If you don't think its the states responsibility to fix this stuff fast, the you got problems.

There has been 2500 potholes filled in a 1.5 mile stretch SO FAR....Thats about 1 hole every 3 ft. At 45mph you would travel 66 feet per second...That would be ~22(or 11 one way to be generous) potholes a second to miss...How fast can you twist that wheel? Sorry, but I thought it was funny in your first post that you said to slow down ...You just don't understand whats going on in the stretch of road.
