I'm looking for some feedback with respect to the stock chip being reinstalled into the ECU via the Wetterauer socket:
How many of you have actually put the stock chip back into the ECU after having the ECU modified? For how long did you leave the stock chip in? Did you experience anything unusual? Any start-up problems, poor running, or check engine lights?
Which module do you have? Is it the old "locking" version or the new setup with separate modules for the performance and stock chips?
Let me state that my car is running perfectly fine with the Wett 1 Bar chip. However, I have been having problems with reinstalling the stock module. The first couple of "stock" modules I had did not work. The car would crank and all the normal startup lights would illuminate but the car would not start. A third module from Wett allowed the car to start immediately and it drives fine. However, after about 10 minutes of driving the check engine light came on and stayed on with no change in driveability. Reinstalling the performance module resulted in the check engine light going out and staying out.
According to Wett, they have not heard of anyone else with this problem. If so, it makes me wonder if I am an isolated case or if most people just haven't had the occasion to try out the stock module. After all, why go back to stock if the engine is running fine?
Any and all feedback either directly via email or by posting here is appreciated.
Sean
97 1.8Tqm

Sean's A4 Page

I have the "new" setup with a separate module for the stock chip. This is a "straight-through" module that has no security embedded in it. It should be just like running the original chip before the ECU was modified.

I'm currently running the v5 chip and changed to the original once after Steve soldered the pieces in place and put the first (original) v3 chip in my ECU. I distinctly remember making a point of trying it so I *knew* it would work. The last time I changed (that was the change from v4 to v5) was when Steve dropped off the chip in December 1997, I think. But there never were any problems.
I'll try it again this weekend to see what happens.
I have the module with the embedded security (which I never liked, IMHO) "scrambler" and all three v3, v4 and v5 chips in a static pack along with the original.
They used to be in the glove box along with the proper tools needed for an emergency change if necessary, but the wife couldn't justify a screwdriver in there for something as silly as remounting a chip. ;-(

On my 30V, I ran the stock chip initially and it worked fine. I think the idle may have been a little funny when I first started it up, but I was expecting that based on experience with previous cars with ECU's. It smoothed out quickly. I haven't tried switching back now that the modified chip has been installed a while. I have the newer style socket arrangement, installed last month.
Dave
98.5 2.8QMS

Try checking the socket contacts, I once had to carefully clean and slightly retention
the contacts inside the socket that is soldered to the PCB.
A Friends car would not even start, after the proceedure, presto runs perfectly.
Hi Sean,
I've got a 2.8 30V and the first Wett chip didn't work and so
I put the stock chip back in and ran it that way for about two
weeks without problem. A working Wett chip is now in and
seems to be fine.
