im really trying to find out how much it would cost to mount and run the wires for a 50" or bigger plasma tv over my fireplace. seems like $500 is a good guess based on AW responses.
curious to know if using ABT is the best way to go (no idea what they would charge me) or using some of the adds on craigslist of people who have the expertise to make this happen?
dunno if ABT will come all the way to north aurora to give me an estimate either...

that's a 50" plasma with about 13-15' distance at most to the seating area. It's definitely not too big or too close.
To answer your question however, it was all done by Abt. They also installed a surround sound Bose system in the basement and wall mounted all my other plasmas throughout the house with not a single scratch, dirt mark or miscue. They did an exceptional job. You pay for it, but it's worth it.

I have at least one friend who mounted his TV about the height that you are considering and then he had it moved down a few months later.
I have a 43" plasma on a table, and I have to say, I wouldn't want it any higher than it is. I never like when a TV is very high, such as in a hutch.
It is 9' from the TV screen to your eyeballs in my new-to-me semi-baller living room. Any closer would be too close.

How about opposite of the fireplace? It might be better, you probably don't want all those windows around it.

We had the wall unit custom-built to fit the TV, and based the height of the TV shelf on Sony's recommendation for the 60" screen - 17" +/-.
Just a thought.
May not be practical in your room.

I choose the colors, then painted the wall the base color, then painted the squares after taping them off.
It was a very time consuming paint job.
