On a TT, and other Audis, there is a threaded tube (item 7) that goes through the existing oil cooler and threads into the car. The existing oil cooler is held on with a 27mm nut. Once you remove this nut, then the oil cooler, you are left with a partially threaded tube that the oil flows through and into the filter.

How hard is it to remove this partially threaded tube from the car, and how did you do it?

I have been told on the TT's that applying a vise grip to the non threaded section of item 7 and you can then twist it out. That just seems too simple. I bought an extra 27mm nut and plan to double nut the area where the oil filter goes on the lower end of 7.

From Etka this arrangement is very similar on all Audis that I looked at.

They aren't in tight. I've had them back out, nut and all, while removing an oil filter. As long as you grab in the non-threaded area, it will be fine.

to keep my oil temp. down during track days. After installing oil temp. gauge my oil temp. runs about 200 - 205F, but at Gingerman a week ago I saw 280F and felt sure it would go higher if I ran more laps and it was only about 70F outside.

A few others with TT's have done this same modification where we remove the existing water cooled (if you can call cooling with 190F water coooling) exchanger and pipe the oil, via stainless braided lines to a remote air to oil cooler located where the stock intercooler use to be (removed for FMIC) folks are seeing oil temps at the track that do not exceed 220F, and oil temps around town of 190-200F.

The procedure is to remove existing oil cooler, put a bypass in the coolant lines, install a new Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate, and then plumb over to a remote air to oil 24 row TruCool radiator. I am also installing an oil pressure transducer to allow me to see oil pressure, just in case there is a leak or failure.

This is the gauge pak many of us with TT's have added. I have oil press. on the left, digital voltage in center, and oil temp. on the right. It actually matches the interior better than the picture shows.

Looking back on it that's one project that I would have gladly paid a shop to do. Just not a lot of space to work in. Made a huge difference with the oil temps on the track. I used to dial it back once the temps hit 280 which didn't take long. With the oil cooler I have not been able to get it past 260 on the hottest of days running for 30-45 minutes.

Just glad I came to my senses and decided to wait and do it right. Phil can fix anything with parts from HD!
