View Full Version : Metal ball bearing noise from cockpit area in new A4...

I've had my A4 for a week, but just noticed a strange noise. Seems to be from the driver's side. It sounds like a metal ball bearing rolling around! It is most evident when I accelerate under moderate to heavy throttle in a low gear like 1st or 2nd and suddenly let off the gas so that the nose dips. Also when I'm making a sharp turn like a 90 degree right-hander. I can also seem to hear it when going over rough road....

Anyone has an idea what it might be? Think it's time to bring into service (already)? It's not a huge deal, and I can't even hear it with the radio on, but it's annoying just knowing it's there! Otherwise the car has been a DREAM!

Mine is pretty annoying. If I get on the gas and suddenly release you'll hear a little metallic tink noise. Or if I'm crusing on the highway and I brake softly you'll hear a little tink sometimes. If I hit an uneven section in the road sometimes I'll hear a few tinks like some little ball bearing is bouncing around in my instrument cluster area....it's kinda hard to pinpoint where it's comming from exactly.

I've complained twice already but to no avail...I will complain again at my next service, again probably to no avail. Once a service guy suggested it may be a piece of welding slag bouncing around in the big aluminum brace that's inside the dash...if this is the case we're screwed as it can't be fixed...yet it drives me freakin nuts cause the rest of the car is so quiet

In my previous car, there was a squeak in the dash, and it used to drive me nuts as well. But it went away on its own. I have my fingers crossed that this may be one of those ailments. I'll call the service department on Monday to see if they might know something.... I'll let you know if I find out anything!

they are REALLY loud on the cement floor of the condo and esp, while making turns even at slow speed. BUt,, what can you do. PS.. i your car is new check the tire pressure,..

it actually seems to be getting worse...maybe I'm just getting more pissed, who knows. Anyhow after being totally frustrated with the dealers lame ass attempts to fix the problem I took the whole bottom of the dash apart...pulled the instrument cluster, the radio, the drivers side knee bolster...you name it. I searched high and low and to no avail.

I did notice that it was louder when I had the knee bolster out and drove around. There is a pretty big aluminium brace in the dash...I think the slag theory is a viable one.

Please keep me informed of the outcome...I will do likewise for you as my car goes in for service sometime in the next week or two.
