View Full Version : Disapointed with my Chip

Disappointed

I just chipped my car (won't say which chip) and it was quite disappointing. I feel the extra power but it doesn't feel like what the stats say. I drove a Jetta VR6 with 174 hp and 180lbs of torque and it was amazing. The chip I have easily surpasses those figures. I haven't yet put the air filter in but I dont' think that there will be any drastic changes in performance (in terms of that whiplash feel in the Jetta). I can only feel the power if I floor the gas pedal but it isn't as significant as I hoped. Does anyone think that I have a defective chip or am I just expecting too much. It is a 1 bar chip that I have.

that lunge of power you feel in the Jetta VR6 is a little trick VW pulls with the drive by wire set-up they have going...basically it gives you the feeling of a burst of power off the line by opening the throttle quite a bit at first...something you don't feel since you're just punching a high dollar electronic gas pedal. At least, this is what I've heard, plus I think the A4 weighs a little more than the Jetta, bigger chassis and stuff...

if your 1.0 bar chipped 1.8T doesn't feel as fast or faster than a VR6 Jetta, the chip is not making its full 14 pounds of boost. It's true that the chip will not be very noticeable under 2,500 RPM, but when you get your foot into the gas, it should be extremely responsive. Can you hear the turbo making the "wheessshhhh" sound?

My 1.8Tqms with the Wett 1.0 bar chip is at least as fast and torquey as my old '95 Maxima SE manual, which is a faster car than the Jetta. But remember, the VR6 is going to have more pull down low than a chipped 1.8T, but in my opinion the the chipped 1.8T should feel faster overall. I'd contact the chip vendor and tell them your concerns.

I think you have a bad chip. I had the same impression with the 1st chip (Wett) I got and sent it back. I don't have any complaints with the replacement that was sent. The first chip was faster than stock so I thought it was just me, but it just didn't push me back into my seat at full throttle. The replacement does.

The VR6 is a great engine and pulls hard. But I still find my 1.8T APR 1.0 bar much more fun to drive. Did you perform the proper throttle adaptation after installing your chip? Are you using at least 93 octane fuel?

If you're still dissatisfied, definitely speak with your tuner.

Good luck!

I ordered the Wett 1.0 and it just didn't seem to perform to my standards. The second chip Kelly sent me was FAST but I got a little pinging at mid RPM. The third time was the charm: this thing just keeps pulling and pulling and pulling.

I talked to Kelly about it at lenght and she has about 15 different 1.0 software configurations. It seems that two identical cars (with sequential serial numbers) won't make the same performance with the same chip. I know it's illogical and quirky, but in my experience it is the case.

Call the chip maker and explain your situation. All of the chip makers will help you out.

I've got both a VR6 (w/ chip) and 1.8T (Wett 1.0) to compare to, and I think you are doing yourself a disservice to compare any turbo-4 to a naturally-aspirated 6.

The VR6 (and other fine 6's) is just flat-out going to have a much more immediate response when you get on the throttle at most rpms. The 1.8T chipped probably pulls at least as hard (if not more), but you don't feel a "snap" immediately despite the K03s diminutive size and relatively little lag (it's still there).

I think you should compare your chipped engine to stock, not a VR6. My wife thought her chip wasn't "as strong as she expected" at first, while I thought it transformed the car quite a bit.

By the way, the VR6 chip changes the engine so little compared to 1.8T chips, that it's hardly noticable in power increase, it's mostly a "feel" thing.

Like others recommended, you might want to try another chip from the same manufacturer (or another), reset the chip, or just swap back to stock and do some testing yourself.

Just don't forget....that 1.8T chipped engine, while pumping out an impressive >100 hp/L is *still* not going to respond like a 6 cyl. If that's the feel you are looking for, you'll have to ditch the turbo thing.

Had a Passat vr6 and now have A4 1.8tq with WETT chip. At first I had the same opinion as you. Someone recomended starting the car from a stop at 2500 rpm and it makes a big difference. I am not sure if this a good thing for the car but it makes the Passat seem slow off the line.
