Since the bottom of the steering wheel is not where I hold it, it cannot be from wear. I tried to get the dealership to change it but they did not this time. Does anyone else have this type of experience and what happened?? it just looks crappy.

The steering wheel on my early '98 lost it's smooth surface on the top (sort of looked like craters), between the 11 and 1 o'clock positions. Audi rep says it is a problem showng up on some steering wheels caused by the sun and replaced the wheel under warranty.

I don't understand why you are seeing it on the bottom of the wheel though. Tell the dealer you always park with the bottom of the wheel facing up.
