View Full Version : CD Changer Err 1 - need help...

I installed the Panasonic CD changer (purchased from Clair) in my 99.5 A4. It has worked fine for a month, but now it will only cycle through each CD returning an Err 1 message. This message is dirty CD or improper insertion. I know the CDs are fine and they should play. I took it to a dealer and they told me that the computer needs to be programmed with the VAG 1551 to tell the radio the CD changer is actually there. Clair, also an Audi dealer, says the changer is a simple plug & play unit. Clair also states that any Audi dealer should consider this a warranty item. Has anyone had any similar experiences? By the way, the dealer here wants me to pay for this because I installed it myself instead of them (I know this is bull, too).

Thanks in advance.

James

What changed between the time the CD worked and when you started getting the error message? Did you change out the CD's in the cassette? If so, are you SURE the CD's are inserted with the label facing the correct direction? I have done this myself.

If it actually does need to be programmed by the dealer, how long can that take? What does he want to charge? Any other dealers you could go to?

I was driving on the I-5 for about three hours when it just suddenly came up with the error message. I've changed all six CDs and tried them again; and sure enough, some would play for about 10 or 20 seconds before the same error message appears.

The dealer wants $43 to program it, but Clair Internation says this does not need to be done. The other close dealership is not too friendly and besides, they want several weeks to order the changer. I'm not willing to live without my CD!

Thanks again,

James
