In a nutshell, my transmission busted on my 96 A4 with 70K which obviously shouldn't happen. To recap, Fletcher Jones quoted me $11K to fix it which is unacceptable. I found someone to do it for $4K so that is much better. I did some research on the parts that went bad in my trans and found out that Audi had upgraded the parts because they knew about the problems (bad sprags). So I wrote Audi and they told me to take a hike. The letter wasn't even nicely written. I think Audi was pissed because I copied in the VP of North America who obviously doesn't have time to deal with a lowly A4 owner. So I advise all of you with 96 A4's to get your transmissions checked out while your car is in warranty. Also, I greatly appreciate all the advice given to me on this site. Everyone has been very helpful.

500-1000 for the intall. I think you can get that 4k # down quite a bit. just start calling shops and used parts places.

dads auto reycling http://www.dadsauto.com/
west cost.

both places have great parts and service

Wait...Dads Auto and good service? Who did you speak to? I seriously need to talk to the manager there after they try to make me cover for bad shipping twice in a row. Read my horror story here:

What exactly is a "sprag"? Are you refering to a plate? Are you refering to a clutch plate?
BTW 96 A4s are already out of factory warranty.
Was your trans rebuilt? What is the warranty on the rebuild?

I had my transmission rebuilt. The sprag and drum went bad but that's all I can really tell you. The sprags are the teeth inside the drums. A couple of them busted off so the transmission was just whirling.

The problem with getting someone to install a used transmission is that it would still have the faulty parts in it that Audi knows about. I had my trans rebuilt with newer, upgraded parts. The parts aren't that expensive. The labor is what inflates the price. Plus I have a 1 year warranty on parts and labor which a mechanic won't offer if he's installing a used trans.
