View Full Version : Best sub 1000$ sq subwoofer. discuss TwoSnails 10-25-2008, 07:08 PM discuss HIS4 10-25-2008, 09:51 PM Some of the best SQ subs on the market don't cost more than $200. Image Dynamics IDQ subs for example. TwoSnails 10-26-2008, 07:55 AM heard the hertz and loved it. I planned on going with the hertz just wondering the other options. I really want to hear the idq as you recommended in a earlier post. And at the price point and power consumption i could run the lrx5.1 for the whole car. Should i contact some id dealers and see if they have any cars with the idq installed? HIS4 10-26-2008, 07:43 PM If you've already bought the Hertz I don't really see a reason to switch now. Don't second guess your choice because what you have is really high end stuff. Once you start comparing equipment at that level, it all about the install and the tuning rather than the equipment itself. You have to be happy with your choice though. Otherwise you'll be replacing equipment constantly thinking it could always be better. TwoSnails 10-27-2008, 06:52 AM TwoSnails 10-27-2008, 11:38 AM morel 12 ported both off of 1150 watts audison HIS4 10-27-2008, 01:03 PM The problem is you're changing a lot of variables so a direct comparison is almost inpossible without actually building both of them and listening to it. Theoretically, if you compared 2-10s and 1-12 of the same brand both in sealed boxes, the 10s would probably get louder just based on cone area. Now if you add to the mix that the 12 is in a ported box, it gets more interesting. The ported box will have a bump in output near the tuning frequency but it's output below the tuning frequency will fall off much faster than the sealed. The amount of increased output will vary depending on the box design. It might be possible to match the output of the 2-10s with the single 12 in a ported box but it will depend on what frequency you take that measurement at and how the ported box built. Now if you change the driver in the ported scenario, you've just open up a whole can of worms that could probably only be answered by running a computer simulation or actually building it. Even the simulation won't be super accurate because you'd have to take cabin gain into account to know how it would actually play in the car. Without actually measuring what the transfer function is of your car, it would be nearly impossible to simulate that accurately. You can compare free air response of the two systems but that still doesn't tell you the whole story. Confused? You should be. stadtjunge 10-27-2008, 01:25 PM Win ISD is a free program that you can use to enter in woofer's specifications and it will help design an enclosure for you. It's very simple to use, and will give you a frequency output chart, MAX SPL, and dynamic range. give it a try and let us know the results.

download WIN ISD

HIS4 10-27-2008, 01:35 PM I've had sealed and ported in the past. Built right, ported can sound very good but it's not easy to get perfect especially if you're trying to use complex shapes. Sealed boxes are more forgiving in terms of building. Small variances in a ported box can really mess up your frequency response. I'm assuming you're looking at a Morel Ultimo 12 since you mentioned $1000 subs. stadtjunge 10-27-2008, 01:50 PM Anything over $800 in the SQ woofer catagory will fetch you a great sound. I haven't had the opportunity to compare the Ultimo and the Mille yet, but in the NorthWest, the Hertz dealers are crazy about their Mille woofers, they absolutely love them. TwoSnails 10-27-2008, 05:54 PM Its a box ported to factory specs with a Ultimo 12 for 700$. i was just thinking if at that price it might be worth a try. Thanks for all the advice. You two really know about the advanced side of audio HIS4 10-27-2008, 06:09 PM Ask your installer to demo the 12 in your car since the box is already built. That will give you a better idea of what you're comparing. Honestly, I did know which I would choose. I'd really have to listen to both to make a decision. There's no way I could choose based on printed specs alone because there are so many variables. You could even ask the installer to demo the 12 temporarily in the car you heard the 10s in (if its still there of course). Hearing it in the same environment will be an even better comparision. TwoSnails 10-27-2008, 06:46 PM with the 12 wouldnt even come close to fitting. Though, i will tell him to throw the 12 in before i make my final on the two 10s. 5speed6 v.2 10-27-2008, 10:25 PM stadtjunge 10-28-2008, 12:08 AM I wasn't ready to spend as much cash as I did. I took the advice of my peers and those on this forum and overspent, and I'm glad I did. If you are willing to shortcut now to save $400 on a $8000 system, you're not doing the rest of the system any benefit. I've had my custom trunk done for ALMOST a year, and I'm ready to rip it out and make something a little more trick. I couldn't spend more than a grand on the trunk, and it shows. Make sure you get exactly what you want the first time, as it's a waste of money to go back and make adjustments. It's a lot of fun to get involved with the design too. It's good to see you doing your research. Sporting brands most people have never heard of is very cool. HIS4 10-28-2008, 12:48 AM More expensive equipment doesn't automatically mean it will sound better. Install and tuning are really what make one system sound better than another. The most expensive equipment can sound like crap if they are not installed and tuned correctly. Now if you're entering your car into a show, then the aesthetic details count. Otherwise, I like to keep it stealth. TwoSnails 10-28-2008, 05:59 AM the single 12 with the lrx 5.1 will be minimal trunk space taken. Its just a bonus about the money TwoSnails 10-28-2008, 09:00 AM millie 12. Sealed vs ported with the same power. So the ported will be much louder at the freq. the box is tuned for but the sealed will have less output but a broader range? 5speed6 v.2 11-04-2008, 09:39 AM |
