An option for those who are looking at Weather-Tech mats: I picked up a pair of front mats at Pep Boys --- and I'd assume they are available at most of the larger chain automotive supply shops --- made by Kraco. They're very heavy molded rubber, but the top surface is covered in a carpet-like substance that is not bad looking and still provide the deep channel protection that conventional rubber mats give. At $29.99, they were a "best buy", in my opinion. The driver's side needed some trimming at the left foot rest, but the passenger side is fine, as is. The "charcoal" mats I bought fit in fine with onyx interior in my 99.5 Avant. Part number is KH-3602, "DURA-MAT", and it's referred to as a "molded carpet rubber mat". They definitely stay where they're put --- little rubber spikes in the underside help keep them from shifting.
Having said this, I'm more interested in the practical capacity of this vehicle than, I'm guessing, some on this forum. After this weekend camping and kayaking at Rehobeth Beach (Delaware), I'll update this post if it's warranted.
