I am thinking about doing the following audio upgrades to my 99 B5 A4 with the stock symphony sound system.

Rear deck:
Polk m525 5.25 speakers (40w RMS)
Rockford Fosgate p201 Amplifier (50w x 2 RMS)
Homemade boxes around the

Sub woofer:
Polk 104DVC 10”
Homemade Band pass box
Profile 100w x 1 Amplifier

Now my question is, will this setup sound unbalanced with the stock fronts? Also, I believe since the rear speaker are self amplified I can take the line level going there and run it into the punch amp for the rear speakers and split it to the profile amp for the sub, is this correct?

I think it will sound unbalanced because all your sound will be coming from the rear deck. Just upgrade the fronts and fade the rears to the point where you can barely hear them.

If I upgrage the fronts what is the best way to go about amplifying them? For instance, if i did the same polk/fosgate setup where would I mount the amp and how would I do the wiring?

Thanks for the opinion!

First thing's first, get a new head unit. It will sound like crap when you're amplifying the symphony head unit, you need to run high end RCA's throughout the car, and don't go bandpass for the sub, ported will sound much better, but I personally only go sealed. Run the rears off deck power, and the fronts off an amp, and fade the rears so you cannot hear them if you're sitting in the front.

Any recomendations for a reasonably priced head unit (less than $200)? Will I be able to use the factory cd changer as well or will I have to eliminate that? If I amp the fronts, where should I mount the amp?

Thanks

As far as what kind of deck, you can look into the entry level Clarion units for a decent deck that's around $200. You might even get MP3 in that range. Then you won't have to worry about how you're going to hook up the amp to the fronts because the new head will have line outputs for that.

I have run an aftermarket amp and speakers with the stock head unit and I have to agree that the head unit sucks. Changing head units made a big difference.
