the H/U *can* have "Bose" coding in it, a set of equalization parameters to deal with the "Bose" amp and speakers.
This is why the H/U sez "BOSE" on the display when you turn it on.
The 'Bose' coding can be used on a system W/O the bose amp and speakers, but the resulting sound may be more bass-heavy.

The actual H/U's are 'plug-and-play'.
