View Full Version : Anyone running coaxials in the (A4) front doors (i.e. not using stock tweeter location)? WishfulThinking 10-13-2003, 10:11 PM TROLL 10-14-2003, 12:46 AM AggregatVier 10-14-2003, 02:09 AM Avoids psycho-acoustical effect of distorting high frequency placement. Must..........not........look.......at.......sig. markbradford 10-14-2003, 07:18 AM The stock tweeter location SUCKS, BIG TIME. WAY too close to the listener. Maximizing the path length by moving the tweeter to the door is a good start. Custom kicks would be better, but putting a 5 1/4" coax set in the doors is an easy, economical upgrade. sack lunch 10-14-2003, 08:41 AM and no further than 18" away in order for them to still sound like a point-source (which is the goal, usually, in an audio setup). However, while i don't agree with mark that the stock tweeter location is that bad, you can make them work if you get tweeters that have good off-axis dispersion, wire them properly to their own amps, and adjust their levels to the overall system so they're not blaring in your ears. markbradford 10-14-2003, 10:26 AM just mount the tweets flush in the kick panel and put a set of 5 1/4" woofs in the door. Keep em nice an close and no need to do a full (HUGE PITA) kick panel install. And you'd still enjoy the sonic benefits of a component set. I'm just turned off of the stock tweet location due to previous experience with Quart tweets there. jbenedict 10-14-2003, 10:26 AM markbradford 10-14-2003, 10:38 AM Would you not want to extend and equalize the path length if possible? I know it's more work and utilizing the stock location is *decent* to keep the labor down, but I wouldn't call it ideal considering it's right on top of the listener. jbenedict 10-14-2003, 11:23 AM ... but you want your sound stage to be up level with you or higher, not down with your seats. If you don't build custom kick panels that point the speakers up at you and instead you put them in the door on a coax config, then your sound stage is going to be low. The kick panels will also have a low sound stage effect but not as much. Like I said, the "right" setup will sound good with the tweets in the stock tweeter location. WishfulThinking 10-14-2003, 11:25 AM so I'm thinking of going coax, or the like. I'd like to avoid fancy custom work though. markbradford 10-14-2003, 11:31 AM

jbenedict 10-14-2003, 11:48 AM markbradford 10-14-2003, 12:29 PM ph0ust 10-18-2003, 09:42 PM what if you are using a coaxial speaker that has a directional tweeter in it (i.e. the tweeter can be rotated to point upward at the listener)? i am getting a pair of polk momo coaxs that do this. i have heard that it actually sounds better than using components, but never really believed/understood it. thanks for the info! TROLL 10-19-2003, 04:25 PM at least with separates, you can further control the crossover point between the mid and tweeter. the only reason i see for going coaxial is if you're budget is very limited and you're lazy to install separates. sack lunch 10-19-2003, 05:09 PM MNSteve 11-11-2003, 07:31 AM I did that in my A4. I had recessed tweeters that were about two inches around, and about one inch deep. I cut holes in the kick panel and put them there, and the woofers in the stock location. Then, I got small surface mount tweeters, and mounted them on the dash, crossed over at 16k hz and up. This was just for filler, to keep it from sounding like the music was coming from your feet. It worked FANTASTIC! It made the sound stage much more open, and made the stereo separation much more even. The reason is that your ears hear by proximity, and this way the distance is about the same from the right and left. From the floor to your left ear may be 3 feet, and to your right ear about 5 feet. But, at the top of the door, the left may be 8 inches, and the right 4 feet. You hear much better the first way. Steve |
