I am building a box, where the base, front and one side will be made out of fiberglass. The rest should be made out of MDF (bottom, front and side have odd bulges etc).

Any ways, I have not applied these layers (in this order)...
1.) fiber cloth (NOT fleece, actual fiberglass cloth- thinner stuff)
2.) another layer of fiber cloth
3.) layer of fiber cloth
4.) 1 layer on all sides of fiber mat (the thick stuff with the fibers going every which way)

I left the first layer dry completely. I then applied the next 2 right on top of each other. I allowed to dry to a tacky feel. I then applied the mat, which should start drying now. Any ways, I am wondering how many layers are really needed? Right after this I plan to build my sub frame (wooden frame to hold sub). I will fiberglass the supports in, and fiberglass the curves where the soon to be hardened fiberglass meets the MDF on every other side.

Does this sound about right? How long should it take for the fiberglass currently installed to fully harden where I can take it out? I plan to do the next steps out of the car that is why I ask. Also how many layers should I still apply. I will probably not take it out of the car today, and remove it tomorrow. In the mean time I will build the frames up.

SO:
1.) how many layers are still required to make it nice and solid (currently have 3 layers cloth, 1 layer mat)?
2.) how long should I let this harden before I can remove it?
3.) anything I should change about my method since I have to do the exact same thing for the other side tomorrow?

just curious how you calculate internal volume if building a sub box out of fiberglass that is a pretty organic shape with lots of curves???

Packing peanuts--get a small-medium box, calculate the interior volume in ft3, mark the point at which you hit the interior volume your driver needs, then fill w/packing peanuts. Then start approximating in your car:

Start glassing:

Then stop before you're done b/c you & your wife have a baby coming in November:

(By the way, I shot for .42ft3 for each 10" sub, and that's EXACTLY what I ended up with!)

For me, I used the hardener that dried in the least amount of time (im impatient) so the mix was fully hardened within about 6hours.. It was dry to the touch in about 3 (I might be off by an hour or two, its been awhile since Ive layed any fiberglass).. so

1.. I pretty much used the touch and feel method.. Once I get everything to a strength/weight combination that I was happy with I stopped adding layers.. No need to get crazy unless its a structural member.. Go with about 2 more layers of matting and see how rigid the piece feels, and if you want it stiffer, goahead and add more..

2.. This really depends on what kind of hardener that you are using.. I noticed with my epoxy resin there are a few different stages during the curing process.. First you have what I like to call the "wet phase" which lasted about for about 3 hours.. During the wet phase the resin begins to stiffen up but not to the point that you can't bend it and of course it is still wet to the touch.. Until the resin is fully cured I was able to bend the piece to a pretty good extent.. Next up.. I had what I liked to call the hardening phase.. :) Yeah.. Im clearly technical with this stuff.. During this phase it was dry, and malleable.. After about 6 hours the piece was fully hardened..

3. Everything seems pretty good.. Looking forward to the pictures..
