The new NIN CDs have proven to me how inadequate the factory stereo is in my '99 A4. The tracks with heavier bass lines (particularly 'The Fragile', 'Even Deeper', and 'Starfu**ers, Inc.') really sound like crap on this system, even at moderate volume levels.

So how can I upgrade this thing w/o spending a fortune? Can I just replace all of the speakers w/o screwing around with amps and subs? I want to spend less than $1K....any ideas would be appreciated.

First off, do you have the Concert or Bose system? If it's the Concert, get a good 4 channel amp, attach RCA connectors to the line level pinouts and common ground on the back of the Concert head unit, and have your installer hook the amp up to these. Then invest in a good set of speakers (actually the stocks aren't bad when powered by a decent amp). Total cost should be right in your price range.
