My problem was I did not have a powered antenna adaptor. I bought a VW powered adaptor from Best Buy for $9 bucks. It looks like an aluminum tube about 6" long, with a wire sticking out from it. Hook up the power antenna control wire off the new head unit to that wire and Viola! A.M reception.
Whew, now I can listen to my sports radio program on the drive to work!

I've got the same situation where my FM reception is fine, but I get zero AM. Not a big deal to me, cause I'm usually listening to CDs, but something I'd like to have taken care of if it only costs $9. Thanks for your help.

I guess the Audi's have antennaes that are amplified. Since you removed the original radio, the amplification connections are thus severed. If you get this amplified adaptor, it should work for any aftermarket radio... as the connections are universal.
One thing though.... if you go to a super store like Best Buy or Circuit City or whatever you have near you (as opposed to a regular stereo shop), they most likely won't have this item out in the general merchandice area. You'll have to go to the install shop around back and ask them specifically for it. Unless they are out of stock, they ought to have it because if they do any installs on european cars, they gotta have it.
