i just received my new rear deck speakers today. the normal run of the mill +,- kind.. just like every speaker out there, unlike the oem audi concert rear speakers which are amplified.
i took out the oem speakers and to my surprise the amplified one has a plug attatched to it with 9 wires! which 2 wires do i use??? the right side is pretty simple cuz theres only 2 wires going to it. BUT, while trying to connect the two wires that went to the oem speaker to my new speaker, i got nothing!
argh!! i thought it was going to be a simple drop in affair.
im looking at the left plug right now. theres 9 wires going into 3 rows:
first row- 1. red/blue (i think this may be power, cuz its kinda thick)
2.brown
3. white
second row:
4. blue
5. brown/black
third row:
6. red/green
7. blue/red
8&9 are in the same slot and theyre both brown/red! could these be it?? i just noticed this right now..

i really really wish i had a multi-tester!! then again, i would have no idea how to use it =(

the right side has two wires: red/green and brown/black.

the right seems to be spliced into the left speaker upstream, but is covered with a gang of fibertape which is really hard to cut.

am i supposed to rewire everything back from the headunit?? btw, im not running the oem concert head unit any longer i have the jvc kdsx1000r.

many many thanks in advance,
brian

Did you connect the JVC yourself?
Did the JVC work with those rear speakers?
Do you know if you hooked up the RCA's on the JVC to go to the rear speakers, or did you just use the speaker outputs on the JVC?

I guess the whole idea is to have the "rear" speaker outputs on the JVC going to the new speakers by way of the existing wiring. So you'd want to look at the wiring behind the stereo to see if any of it looks like what you are seeing at the rear deck. If it does, now's when you'd want to use a multimeter in "continuity" mode to check to see if those are indeed the same wires.

Or you could just go out and buy some speaker wire and run it between the stereo and speakers so you're sure of how it's connected.

What speakers did you get?

How easy was it to get the old ones out?

I'll be doing it someday.
Mark P

i didnt do the head myself, but i do know that they used the existing wiring to the rear oem speakers.
i would really rather not run new wires to the rear, but if thats what i have to do, then thats what i gotta do.. actually, i'll be pulling the headunit out cuz i just got the changer in the mail today. so when i do that, perhaps i can run a line back to the rear speakers along with the changer cables.
i got these kenwoods.. i think. there are only a handfull of speakers (according to crotchfield) thatll fit under the grills. they were only $70!
i thought it was going to be an easy replacement of my oem's.. remember my left rear speaker? the plastic covering was blown off because of the damn bass.. and it was starting to distort like crazy.

the old ones are a cinch to take out! (thanks keith!) all you need to do is pop 3 clips and unscrew 2 screws on each side.

if youre gonna do it someday, wait until you get a 4ch amp. im only doing this now cuz i blew my stock ones.. i'll be installing my ads amp one of these days, once i figure out where the hell im going to be able to fit it =)

now for the questions.
multimeter = voltmeter ??
guy at crotchfield, who was totally unhelpful, told me to crank up my stereo and get a voltmeter. it should move to the music. that way i figure my lines.. +,-??? he didnt know either.

thanks,
brian

connected the RCA outputs on the stereo to the same spot that the Concert radio was connected. This would be correct since the concert has low level outputs and thus the amplification is happening just before the speaker.

So anyway, if they did connect in the above fashion, even if you found the correct wires of the 9 wire bundle, your speakers would not make any sound because they would be connected to the low level (line level, RCA) outputs of the stereo. Basically, there would be no amplification for the speakers.

The amplifiers on the speakers would need power, ground and perhaps a "remote turn-on" signal. Those wires could be determined (excluded) with a multimeter

mulitmeter = voltmeter + other meters, thus MULTImeter.

So once again, there may not be the correct connections on the back of your stereo. The connections may be to the RCA outputs instead of the speaker-level (high-level) outputs. Without this connected properly, you'll never get the sound at the speakers.

If you have to run cables for a CD changer, I'd say to run new speaker wires at that time. Although if you are adding an amp for those speakers, you may want to wait until then, because you wont need the speaker wires running to the stereo (but you will need to run power, ground, remote turn-on, RCAs for the amp).

Don't you already have a CD changer? I think you said it skipped, is this why you are replacing it?

hopefully, I'm the least bit of helpful.
Mark P

Hope this answers some of your q's:...
I had the same questions when wiring my JL Audio Stealthbox. There's a FAQ if you look under how to add a subwoofer to your stereo. It tells you which wires (so many colors!!!) run left and right. Relax, all the info I think you need is there.
Good luck!

Excerpt:
Connect the common ground lead to the brown wire with red stripe.

Connect the Left channel wire to the blue wire with green stripe.

Connect the Right Channel wire to the blue wire with red stripe.

REMEMBER! Each side has a brown ground!

FAQ

what a nightmare! i bought a multimeter and was totally lost on how to use it.. after about 20 minutes of testing each wire and not figuring out anything, i tore off all the fibertape to get at the lines. i took one brown to each negative terminal on each speaker, then the blue/red and blue/green to the positive on each speaker.. it worked!
now for the nightmare part. the speakers didnt fit!!! i had to tap new holes to make the damn things fit!
one of these days i'll wire up my 4ch amp and have someone fabricate me custom pods for the speakers.. until then, i'll deal with it.

gus, thank you very much for the info.. unfortunately i read it after i did the install. argh.

regards,
brian

i now have rear fill again =)
