View Full Version : Driver's side tweeter output? (more)

I just had the tweeter unit in the driver's side door replaced (it was completely dead) by Audi under warranty of course. I have the concert head unit non-bose, non-phone setup. My question is this - is anyone else experiencing uneven output levels from the driver's side v.s. passenger's side tweeters? I'm getting much less output from the drivers side than from the passengers side. Would like some other points of reference here before deciding what to do next. I can live with the factory stereo - this is a bit annoying however. I'm curious if I were to replace the tweeter units with non-factory tweeters would I experience a difference in output level? I thought some of you on this board might have noticed such behavior from your A4 before upgrading the stereo.

BTW, I did quite a bit of searching in the forums on this topic to no avail on anything this specific. I also found a TSB for 98 model A4's indicating that if the concert head unit is programmed wrong (i.e. thinks it is a bose unit) there will be no output from the driver's side tweeter at all. Not what I'm experiencing. I'll also post in the A4 forum, as most people on the Audio forum by now have a non-factory stereo setup.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Whenever you put tweets up high near the mirror pods, this is always a potential problem. Because the signal path length from your ear to the drivers side tweet is so much different than the length from your ear to the passenger side... it can sound funny. Try this experiment...Sit in the car and lean over so your head is centered between the left and right side of the car. Does it sound better now? If it does, then what you have is probably a phase problem. This is typically what happens when you mount tweeters up high. There are ways around it, but it would involve lots of custom work... ie, aftermarket amp, out of phase wiring, moving the tweets down low on the doors in a custom install.... those are just a few ideas... but get ready to spend some $$ if you want to go through all of that.
