I couldn't describe the sound that I would get from my system. I just knew that at any moderate to loud volume, I would feel my ears ache...sort of a high pitch noise that wasn't part of the music. Then, you said the right word in a post down below...."SHRILL." That's what I hear and it bothers me. Must be the MBs, huh?
New speakers...or do you think Chris can add a module to my amp tune it? I'll call Chris too, to see what he thinks.
It won't be a waste to get new speakers. I can just pass the MBs to my little sister's car.
I don't get the satisfaction from listening in my car like I do at home.
After installing the MB's in my A4, I totally understand why they're so unpopular with some people (however, I'm happy with my install, but I love to R-O-C-K).
I ask which Quarts you have because when I was demo-ing speakers I listened to 3 sets: Referenz, Referenz Premium, and Q series. The Premiums and the Q series both had 1" tweeters with much lower cross-over points than the Referenz or Autobahn series that have a .75" tweeter. Although I agree that all were very bright, the sets with the 1" tweeters were significantly "smoother" and not nearly as "shrill". Much better imaging as well.
On a completely seperate note, MBQuart in Germany was placed in receivership in 1998 (similiar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US). Our firm did the financial consulting work on the US subsidiary. I had heard from a local high-end shop in Seattle that the quality and sound from the recent offerings was not up to the same level of MBQuarts from years past. Also, someone on the board here commented recently that the old competition speakers were way better than anything MB was currently offering. Both comments seem consistent with the types of cost-cutting and restructing that goes on when a company restructures.
I got the MB's because they were less than 1/2 the normal retail price because they were 1998 models. I didn't have a chance to listen to anything else "high-end" other than a/d/s. I really liked the a/d/s, but they were $$$$ and my wife wouldn't OK the purchase. That's OK: I'm very happy with my old-model, 1" tweeter MBQuarts.

I still think you should scoot to other speakers. The top of the line MB's are nice, but they're quite a bit. Hey, ya know how my Focals sound =) If you get components, have Chris install the tweeters down low, where they are in my car. It helps out a ton!
