View Full Version : Hey Alan T any lucky fixing the squeal?? JAB 09-29-1999, 03:44 AM just wondering if they could fix the squeal.... I have the same problem and I hate people staring at me as I pull away and my car lets out the rebel yell! thanks P2 09-29-1999, 06:02 AM I saw this was discussed further down the board, but I'll just post this up here: When my 98.5 2.8QMS had about 12K miles, I got that noise intermittenly for awhile on normal 1st gear launches. It disappeared until now 20K.....I got the noise once or twice within the past month.....I cannot reproduce this noise at will. That sucks. From what I read here, its either the master clutch cylinder or the timing belt (or some kind of belt). Personally, I would think its one of the belts slipping when it gets moister trapped on it. I do recall getting it when it was raining...not sure if that had anything to do with it. However, somebody on this board claimed when they got their master clutch cylinder replaced, the noise disappeared. So if anyone can isolate this problem....please post!! I want this fixed before my 22.5K service....thanks. Patrick John 09-29-1999, 07:51 AM Whats strange is that when i told the technican over the phone what the problem was (ie the loud squeal that says " hey everyone look at me" when i launch in first gear) he said - "do you have an A4 1.8T - it could be your turbo!" Will let you know how it goes. John A4 1.8T alan t. 09-29-1999, 09:01 AM alan t. 09-29-1999, 09:02 AM P2 09-29-1999, 09:08 AM I know its not the Turbo unless my 2.8 has a Turbo I don't know about....I'll bring it up again on my next service......has any of you experiencing this driven their car in the rain or in high humidity when the squeal happened? Just a theory.... P2 alan t. 09-29-1999, 09:09 AM With car warm place shifter in neutral with clutch out and let it run for 30 seconds or so. It's just like you're at a stop light with the car in neutral and clutch out. Then put car in gear and immediately take off with moderate throttle. That usually makes the noise occur. If you hesitate with clutch in and first gear sound won't occur. I can't figure it out. As I said I think Andy Hedin had the problem and they replaced his tension pulley. Audi must have this problem on record if only the techs. weren't so lazy to look things up on their computer systems. |
